Vegetable Gardens Help Morale Grow

After laying off an employee, cutting hours and discontinuing raises, Sheryl Woodhouse-Keese, owner of Twisted Limb Paperworks LLC in Bloomington, Ind., invested $600 last fall to create a 1,500-square-foot garden outside the recycled paper-products company's office. Now, her four employees can take home their pick of 10 herbs and 22 vegetables.

"The garden really is a nice benefit, saving them on their food bills," said Ms. Woodhouse-Keese, who estimates the garden has meted out $2,400 in produce this season, from tomatoes to potatoes.

Employer-sponsored gardens can be a cheap and easy way to boost workers' morale, relate better to certain customers and expand a company's health and wellness program. It is unclear how many businesses have them, although the National Gardening Association projects a 19% increase in food gardening this year, as the recession motivates households to trim grocery lists.

The EyeWriter | F.A.T.

"The EyeWriter project is on ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people, who are suffering from ALS, with creative technologies. The project began in Los Angeles, Caifornia in 2009, when members of the GRL, FAT, OF and TEG communities teamed-up with a legendary LA graffiti writer, publisher and activist, named Tony Quan, aka TEMPTONE. Tony was diagnosed with ALS in 2003. The disease has left him almost completely physically paralyzed… except for his eyes. But, the ALS hasn’t touched Tony’s sharp mind, creative energy or his desire to write graffiti. In August of 2009, artist from around the world: London, Hong Kong, Madrid, Amsterdam and New York City, converged for 10 days in southern California, converted Mick and Caskey Ebeling’s Venice Beach house into a laboratory and began to work with Tony on a low-cost, open source eye-tracking system that would allow ALS patients to draw using just their eyes.."

opening up my iphone, knight in shining armor.

hi dear readers -

i recently took a rollercoaster ride when i decided to purchase a used iphone to unlock and use with tmobile. After much research, interviewing and apprehension, I am currently the proud owner of an unlocked iphone.

in my search, i found this (adorable) teenager who (i am slightly embarrassed to admit) became one of my most trusted sources. ;) i read plenty of techy posts on the subject, and watched beaucoup youtube vids - but in the end - this boy was it!

(also, important if you are curious, i used redsn0w to jailbreak and ultrasn0w to unlock! - http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/126908912/redsn0w-in-june - it took MINUTES and i am now a happy iPhone user / loyal T-Mob customer!

shout-out to roddy too - having a friend to ask a million questions of is huge!!)

Beware Responsible Citizens.

I shop at thrift stores every day. Seriously, like every single day. I don't always buy but, living in San Francisco, they're all over the place and represent the modern day treasure hunt - you never know what you'll discover.

Leave it to corporate America to take this most harmless of hobbies and turn it against us. According to the Concord Monitor, credit card companies are noting purchases like thrift stores, shoe repair and tire retreading as proof that you're headed for financial ruin and using this as reason to deny, lower and in some cases even harm your credit.

Big Brother proves once again he's no friend of the planet. (source: Mother Jones)

i am speechless.
